  Kenko KCM3100 Colour Meter Review

 Kenko KCM3100 Colour Meter

The Kenko KCM3100 Colour Meter allows you to measure the colour temperature in degrees Kelvin of either ambient or flash light. Measuring in degrees Kelvin is essential when determining the proper filtration based on the film's spectral sensitivity as well as the source of light. The meter is versatile and can be used for both still photography and cinema. The colour meter ensures photographers accurate colour and reproduction, which is especially useful for commercial and fashion photographers who want to accurately capture and portray their images. Using the Kenko KCM3100 allows the photographer to perfect light balance as needed.

As with other Kenko products, the meter is built for durability and ease of use. It features a large LCD screen with three display modes depending on the type of filtering system or photography used. The buttons on the meter are simple and adequately sized and allow the user to switch between display modes as well as program memory.

The model is lightweight (6 ounces) and easily held in the palm of the hand. It is powered by two AA batteries and comes with a strap and a carrying case.

The Kenko KCM3100's display modes are each designed for a specific style of photography or filtering system. The light balancing index or LB display is useful for choosing either the appropriate amber or blue filter while the colour correction (CC) display makes choosing the proper light filter easy. The colour correction display uses green and magenta colour filters and Kodak filter numbers. The third display shows the Mired difference between the colou temperature and the light source available and type of film used. The three displays make it a snap to get the colour accuracy perfect. Each display option is able to show a wide range. For instance, it can show from -500 to 500 mireds on the LB index. Handy tables with light balancing indexes on the back of the meter make selecting the proper filter even easier.

The colour meter is suitable for both outdoor and in the studio use. For studio use, the analyzer mode will cause the meter to read the light from a flash only, which is convenient when you don't want ambient light to be used in the photograph at all. Furthermore, flash and ambient light can be measured either using a sync cord or not. When the sync cord is used, the flash will go off when the reading button is pushed. Not using the sync cord is convenient. It sets the meter on standby and takes the reading whenever the flash goes off.

The nine memory channels available on the Kenko KCM3100 allow the photographer to customize the meter for their equipment. A user can program the memory based on the equipment being used as there are always variances in film quality or light color. The memory channels assure the photographer of accuracy no matter what sort of light or film is being used.

The Kenko KCM3100 colour meter is a high quality tool suitable for professionals and those who aspire to professionalism.
